“I loved working hard and having my own business & meeting so many great people,” said Ed Restivo, a Spencerport NY resident & the owner of Cleaning Services Unlimited, Inc. He retired in 2025 at age 82 after 51 years of running the cleaning business. What started as carpet & furniture cleaning expanded to include janitorial services, post construction cleaning such as hospitals, professional buildings, prisons etc. Throughout his time, he had hundreds of residential and commercial jobs. At one point, he was handling a mental health and social services facility with over 200,000 Square feet. Pretty impressive!  

       Here are two of his many funny “mishaps” while on the job: “I was stripping a kitchen tile floor with a heavy rotary brush machine for a residential customer and as I was working across the floor with my stripper solution, I backed myself into a corner and started to stand on the power cord which was behind me. Now this gets scary and funny at the same time. The brush caught the power cord and tossed me in mid-air. Everything was a blur. As I was falling backwards I was holding on to the handle and power switch, causing the stripper solution to cover the Kitchen cabinets and counters! Well at this point I thought I just bought a new Kitchen! I proceeded to flood the cabinets like a fireman - water everywhere! I was working alone and moved like the Roadrunner while my back was covered with dried floor stripper the whole time! The happy ending was that not a spot remained anywhere on the cabinets. I finally finished the job before the customer arrived, it looked great, I picked up my check and left. A week later I received a thank you card for a job well done !” (If the customer only knew !! LOL) Another humorous incident occurred on a post construction job cleaning a new prison. One day at lunch time, myself & my crew sat down to have lunch & I realized one of my employees was missing. He called me & just said the “door” was locked. I told him not to worry about it and just get up here and have some lunch. Five more minutes passed and the phone rang again & he said “Ed, I’m locked in the cell”. I asked him how he liked it and he said “I don’t like it – let me out of here - please come and get me!!” Fortunately I had the keys!”

       Prior to his cleaning business, Ed worked for Eastman Kodak for eight years and then worked as a superintendent for a large apartment complex. Ed grew up in Albion, New York and has lived in Spencerport for 45 years. He is married and has two daughters. Did you know that the writer of this article also worked for Ed for one year?
